Do you know what happens in your body when you watch horror or get scared?

Many people experienced that sudden rush of excitement and feel while watching horror movies. That suspense and terror increase the blood flow all over your body from head to toe. You get scared!!

Not only while you are watching movies, you even get scared for small things like people just saying “Boo!” or at night to go to your washroom.

You know that it is not real but sometimes you move to the edge of your seat, bite your nails, close your eyes and get ready to jump as if it’s real.

So, what actually happens inside your body? why do react like that?

” It’s just your Fear, ain’t Real “

When something frightening happens in a movie or when is someone yelling at you, you feel that it’s gonna cause you harm. That fear triggers a signal into your brain.

This signal travels to a region near the base of the brain called amygdala. In response to this signal amygdala further, helps in further transmitting this signal to other two regions of the brain by firing neurotransmitter glutamate.

Signals are sent so deep into the base of the brain where you have little or no control, hence you freeze and jump suddenly. These reactions are totally automatic and quick.

One more signal is sent to the hypothalamus which triggers the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system pumps hell a lot of adrenaline into your blood stream. This sudden influx of extra adrenaline hormone increases heart rate pumping more blood forcefully all over your body increasing your blood pressure as well. This is the reason why you feel shaky or unsteady when you get scared.

In these situations, you either freeze, or run away, or close your eyes or bite your nails or scream or do all weird things to nullify that fear.

Here’s when your parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS )comes into play, PSNS helps in lowering the adrenaline rush, lowers your heart rate, blood pressure and brings you back to normal state.

First, you react, then your brain recognises it’s not real, and PSNS helps to calm you down.
